Grants available to fund Living Proud training programs

Living Proud are delighted to inform you that a new round of Suicide Prevention Small Grants are now available. Local government and not-for-profit organisations are invited to apply for small grants to undertake suicide prevention training.

Grants of up to $20,000 are available for organisations to undertake evidence-based training that equips people with skills to recognise and support someone who is at risk of suicide. Training programs offered by Living Proud that applicants can apply for include Opening Closets, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) and safeTALK. Trainings are available all across Western Australia.

This funding backs the State Government’s commitment to halve the number of suicides by the end of 2025, as part of its $26 million Suicide Prevention 2020: Together we can save lives strategy.

A copy of the application form and associated guidelines are available through this link http://www.mhc.wa.gov.au/mentalhealth_changes/wa_suicide_prevention_strategy/Small_grants_nd_training.aspx For more information and support on how to apply, please contact Mason Rothwell on (08) 9370 0333 or mason.rothwell@mhc.wa.gov.au. ASIST

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is for everyone 16 or older—regardless of prior experience—who wants to be able to provide suicide first aid. Shown by major studies to significantly reduce suicidality, the ASIST model teaches effective intervention skills while helping to build suicide prevention networks in the community.

Virtually anyone age 16 or older, regardless of prior experience or training, can become an ASIST-trained caregiver. Developed in 1983 and regularly updated to reflect improvements in knowledge and practice, ASIST is the world’s leading suicide intervention workshop. During the two-day interactive session, participants learn to intervene and help prevent the immediate risk of suicide. Over 1,000,000 people have taken the workshop, and studies have proven that the ASIST method helps reduce suicidal feelings for those at risk.

Workshop features:

  • Presentations and guidance from two LivingWorks registered trainers
  • A scientifically proven intervention model
  • Powerful audiovisual learning aids
  • Group discussions
  • Skills practice and development
  • A balance of challenge and safety

safeTALK

safeTALK is a half-day alertness training that prepares anyone over the age of 15, regardless of prior experience or training, to become a suicide-alert helper. Most people with thoughts of suicide don’t truly want to die, but are struggling with the pain in their lives. Through their words and actions, they invite help to stay alive. safeTALK-trained helpers can recognize these invitations and take action by connecting them with life-saving intervention resources, such as caregivers trained in ASIST.

Training features:

  • Presentations and guidance from a LivingWorks registered trainer
  • Access to support from a local community resource person
  • Powerful audiovisual learning aids
  • The simple yet effective TALK steps: Tell, Ask, Listen, and KeepSafe
  • Hands-on skills practice and development

safeTALK helps expand the reach of suicide intervention skills in communities around the world. Watch this video from the Ontario Hockey Association, one of the many organizations that has implemented safeTALK, click the links below to participate in or support this life-saving program.
