The ‘Law Reform (Decriminilsation of Sodomy) Act of 1989 passes.
Consensual sex between adult men in the privacy of their own home is no longer considered a criminal act.
However, this law bought in unequal age of consent laws. The age of consent was 16 for most people, but 21 for same sex activity between men. There was also a prohibition to “promote or encourage homosexual behaviour” which had a chilling effect on sex education and health policy.
