About Living Proud
Living Proud is an LGBTI* community initiative coordinated by Gay and Lesbian Community Services (GLCS) WA as part of the OneLife WA Suicide Prevention Strategy.
With the aim to improve the mental health and wellbeing of all Western Australians, the State Government has launched the One Life Western Australian Suicide Prevention Strategy to address the unacceptable high suicide rate in Western Australia, committing $13 million to implement the Strategy from 2009 – 2013. For further information about the One Life Western Australian Suicide Prevention Strategy, go to: www.mcsp.org.au.
*Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, transgender and intersex people, and other sexuality, sex and/or gender diverse people, regardless of their term of self-identification
In late 2010, GLCS WA was approached by One Life to undertake community consultation in order to develop an LGBTI-specific Community Action Plan (CAP), which involved assessing current suicide prevention initiatives and identifying some of the LGBTI community’s needs in relation to suicide prevention.
The Future Of Living Proud
The project has been funded until June 2013 – but that doesn’t mean that we have to stop Living Proud! As the project is by the community for the community, it relies on your support, initiative and commitment to keep going.
LGBTI People and Suicide Risk
Each year in Western Australia, over 200 people complete suicide and an even greater number harm themselves in suicide attempts. It is estimated that more Australians die by suicide than motor vehicle accidents each year.
